Top Stories in Gaming of Last Week

Last week brought plenty of exciting and disappointing news in the gaming world. Here are the top five news stories from the past week.

1)  Kotaku – “Overwatch’s Competitive Is About to Get an Overhaul”

Overwatch’s first competitive season is coming to a close here very shortly and with the second season already around the corner, Blizzard took to making drastic changes to the way the competitive mode works.

Updates Include:

  • New Rating system that goes from 1-5000 instead of 1-100
  • Will soon have tiers of ranks (gold, diamond, master and grandmaster to name a few)
  • You will never fall out of tier unless in the top 2 tiers
  • No more sudden death and coin flip (ties will occur)
  • People have to be within 500 skill points to play together
  • Top 3 skill tiers (diamond, master and grandmaster) subject to rank point decay if inactive for a week

These are big changes coming very quickly for the first person shooter, but there are a lot of promising new points that should make the competitive mode even more enticing for it’s already large player base. You can see the full article on Kotaku by clicking here.

2) Gamespot – “Final Fantasy 15 Delay Confirmed, New Release Date Announced”

Unfortunately those of you who are excited about the next installment of Final Fantasy, the ten year wait is going to get a couple months longer. The release date has been pushed back to November 29th now. In Gamespot’s article it states:

“According to a statement released by Square Enix, the new date ‘will allow the development teams time to further polish and conduct quality testing so that the reality of the game can match the expectations of both the fans and the creative teams.’ Game director Hajime Tabata said: ‘From the moment we joined this project, our vision was to create a level of freedom and realism previously unseen in the series. Regrettably, we need a little bit more time to deliver on this vision and are confident that this new release date will help us achieve this. As the director and lead of this project, I wish to personally apologize for the additional wait. As a team, we want Final Fantasy XV to achieve a level of perfection that our fans deserve. We kindly ask for your understanding.’”

Hopefully the extra couple months will be worth the wait, but I guess we will find out in November won’t we? For more info about the delay you can read the full article here.

4) Xbox Wire- “Microsoft Acquires Interactive Livestreaming Service Beam”

Xbox continues to try and get innovative technologies under their brand as they go out and buy interactive streaming service Beam. For those of you that do not know what Beam is, it is a live-streaming service like Twitch and YouTube, however Beam does not have any chat delay, so viewers get to interact in real time with the streamer.

“[I]n a blog post on Microsoft News Center, it was announced that Microsoft has acquired Beam, an innovative and interactive livestreaming service that gives viewers the ability to watch and play along with their favorite game streamers in real-time. Beam has evolved game streaming from a passive, watch-and-chat experience into one with real-time participation by allowing the viewer to directly influence a streamer’s gameplay and live broadcast.

‘We at Xbox are excited about this convergence between playing and watching, and want to provide gamers with the freedom and choice to have great multiplayer experiences across all of Beam’s platforms,” wrote Chad Gibson, Partner Group Manager for Xbox Live. “This acquisition will help gamers enjoy the games they want, with the people they want, and on the devices they want.’

Battlefield’s beta gets a release window, so all you World War era shooter fans can rejoice.

“The BF1 open beta will include the Sinai Desert map, seen in the Gamescom gameplay trailer released today, and two modes: Conquest, in which 64 players battle to control objectives on the map, and Rush, a 24-player attack-and-defend mode that has one team trying to destroy Telegraph Posts, while the other fights to protect them. If the posts are destroyed, the Defenders must fall back to a new sector and try a little harder to hold the line.”
